CHROMATIC ADAPTATION

CONSTANT UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Move your eyes across the image
and watch the rotating figures.

Then focus your eyes at the red
dot in the centre and within a
few seconds nothing moves.

Focus your eyes at the vertical pattern in the center of the image and move
your eyes slowly in there. The center appears to move compared
to the horizontal pattern in the surround.

Focus your eye's at the black dot in the middle of the gray haze.
After a while the gray haze will appear to shrink.

Focus your eye's at the black dot in the middle of the pattern of colors for at least 30 seconds,
then keep a white paper between you and the screen and look at the white area and
see a negative afterimage of the pattern in complementary hues.

This effect, called chromatic adaptation, is what causes browns to appear reddish
to someone who has just viewed a green lawn.

Focus your eyes at the black dot in the middle and
move your head backwards and forwards.

Try to count the black dots.

All the horizontal Lines seem to be bent,
but they all are straight lines.

12-00-08

Focus your eyes at the black cross in the
middle of the left image for about 20 seconds.
Then switch to the black cross in de
middle of the white field on the right .
You will see the highlighted colors pink and yellow

A very unpleasant perception/sensation/experience is:
If one human eye is held shut and the other exposed to a bright light for at least 30 seconds, whereas the dark-adapted eye retains its high sensitivity, that of the light-exposed eye has decreased greatly it requires another period of dark adaptation for the two eyes to become equally sensitive.
Please try with the bright white square alongside.

If a person stares for at least 30 seconds at the black
spot in the middle of the colored disk alongside and
then shuts his eyes fast, a colored afterimage will appear.

Work in progress:
Have you ever entered a movie theater on a sunny afternoon? The room probably appeared completely dark but as your visual system adjusted to the reduced level of light you were able to see better after a few moments. This "adaptation mechanism" allows our eyes to recover from an oversensitivity to a particular stimuli. "Chromatic adaptation" occurs when our eyes adjust to certain color stimuli. Follow the instructions below and see how the visual system responds to a color overload.
