Measurements of the color space of reflecting materials can be readily made by use of a spectrophotometer.
A typical spectrophotometer system for color measurement consists of a light source, a reference white and a processor such as the

 Rite's Model 939 hand-held-spectrophotometer

09-03-02
The X-Rite 939 offers the industry’s premier accuracy and multi-unit agreement for hand-held spectrodensitometer solutions, improving upon the benchmark set by its forerunner, the X-Rite 938 Spectrodensitometer. This unique capability enables only the X-Rite 939 to excel in multi-site or multi-party agreement, giving users the ultimate assurance of matches, resulting in color consistency and confidence in product or brand color integrity. Rely on the 939 to effectively communicate color between print buyer, graphic designer, pre-press and pressroom, or to exchange crucial color information with ink and paper suppliers.

How Color Management Systems Works

The diagram, showing smaller RGB and CMY color spaces "mapped" inside the CIE-xy-diagram, demonstrates the process
of Gamut compression.

This process happens frequently when we move colors through the production process: our original scene contains colors that are not captured on photographic film; some colors in the photograph are not within the scanner's color space, or gamut; and still more colors are lost or replaced when the scan is displaced in a monitor's gamut.

By the time our image is printed on proofing devices and on press, its original gamut has been compressed considerably.
At each stage, out-of-gamut are replaced with the nearest approximate achievable colors.

that can be interpreted by a color model or
generated by a specific device
